Unbelievably cool garden following the Chinese style. Hard to believe that it is in the city. The museum, itself has some very interesting historic statues, scrolls and tea artifacts. Worth visiting for the garden alone.
MoreGreat architecture and atmosphere, a decent cafe with the best garden view!
The garden is the winner. Every tree, every stone lantern, every stream is carefully designed and arranged. The result is a poetic wonderland. During momiji, the Japanese maple turning red AND golden, the garden becomes a spectacular painting with every corner you turn.
MoreA gem in the middle of the city. The art collection is impressive, the house is cleanly designed, the Japanese garden out back alone is worth the cost of admission. I wish we had had more time here.
MoreBuilding is beautiful. Collection is interesting. Wish they had audio in English! But Japanese only. There are a good number of placards in English though so that helps. The outdoor cafe and gardens are stunningly beautiful. I would come here just for the garden alone 😍😍😍😍😍
MoreIf you appreciate Japanese traditional art, particularly ceramics and calligraphy of the Japanese Tea Ceremony, this is the place to go in Tokyo. Nezu was a student of Edo Senke, the Edo (i.e., Tokyo) school of tea ceremony, derived from the Omote Senke school (of Kyoto) by highly influential tea master Fuhaku, who taught many Daimyo and commoners as well.
MoreUnique display of Eastern Asian artwork. What makes this museum unique is the spacious and gorgeous outdoor garden, walk it alone and find your zen. Traditional and inspiring.
MoreThe garden here is gorgeous and incredibly vibrant. Despite being a smaller garden there is a whole lot to see. Be aware that there are a lot of mosquitos here. Either cover up or wear a good amount of bug spray.Inside the exhibits are stunning. There are many types of art from silk screen paintings to cast bronze jars. My favourite was the silk screen about the red cliffs. When you see it up close, it's hard to admire the art. Be sure to step back so you can get the full sensation.
MoreThe art exhibit was super mediocre the only reason I'd go is for the garden. The garden is cool. Is it's worth 1000 yen idk. There is a cafe in the garden which is neat but it's 600yen for a coffee. Its very Instagram able if your into that kind of thing just expensive
MoreThe collection is vast and the exhibition rooms are nice and spacious, providing a great place to admire the pieces (with great multilingual descriptions). It feels however that some space is a bit wasted and that more pieces could be shown. The outside garden is lovely addition and it's nice to walk around it.
MoreThis museum has exhibits to witness but the true marvel is its gardens. Quite simply one of the most serene and beautiful gardens I have ever walked through. Throughout the garden there are shrines and statues that exhibit tranquility. Its truly a feast for the eyes and the soul.
MoreThe pace is a tranquility oasis, the current exhibition on highly detailed pommel and guards showcases art that is barely seen. Worthwhile visit for sure. Don’t forget to go out to the park as well.
MoreOk exhibit. Nice garden to explore and walk thru
I like coming here with my kid. There is a lovely garden and the museum is always convenient to get too. They have a beautiful collection of art and spending time here is always a big pleasure.
MoreThe zen garden worth the visit, one of the most beautiful gardens and pond I have seen in my trip.
MoreNezu museum was absolutely beautiful. It wasn’t too crowded and they provide a student discount. There were lots of interesting artifacts and the most beautiful garden to walk through. They even provided bug spray which i really appreciate.
MoreIndoor and outdoor museum space. Many works on display relating to tea ceremony. Outdoor space has several Buddha figures. Open until 5 but last entry is 4:30.
MoreBeautiful place, with an incredible art collection whose works are worth the detour and full of details. Only bad mark is the lack of explained background behind some pieces. Sometimes it's hard for a neophyte to follow.
MoreAmazing experience. The best garden I’ve seen in Japan so far.
Such a beautiful place. Begin by the exhibitions then take a walk in the garden (highly recommended to put on some of the mosquito repellent they give at the entrance, such a nice thought). The garden alone is worth the entrance price; full of different trees and ponds with koi fishes. There are also a lot of statues along the paths. The museum itself is very modern and peaceful. I’m glad I visited. P.s. Come early! Gets crowded in the evening.
MoreAmazingly aesthetic museum with several pieces merging history and nature. Indoors there is an exhibit on tea, while upstairs are a multitude of pieces ranging from works on a culturally significant story to ancient tools. Outdoors is where the real magic happens. The museum opens up into a garden that winds around multiple paths leading to small points of attraction like a shrine or huts.
MoreA small museum with a wonderful garden it always offers amazing exhibitions. A must in Tokyo.
MoreNice architectured structure & building. Feels like needing more activities to enlighten the place. Coffee from Nezu cafe is terrible though. Cappuccino was like from ready made machine. Very bad.
MoreBeautiful building. Great exhibits if you like East Asian art. It’s worth paying entry just to walk around the garden.
MoreThe Museum had great exhibitions on different eastern ancient art. I personally enjoyed the beautiful garden a lot more, so peaceful.
MoreThe collections aren’t vast in size, but they are interesting. Beautiful building and the garden in the back was a really nice, unexpected plus to the experience.
MoreOne of the most beautiful places I've visited in Japan!
There are two reasons to visit the Nezu Museum - the museums large and very diverse art collection donated by Nezu, and the sublime attached gardens. This was once Nezu’s home and garden although the original house is gone and is replaced with the modern museum structure. In addition to extensive Japanese painting, decorative arts, and sculpture, the collection includes a spectacular gathering of high quality Chinese Shang and Zhou Dynasty copper alloy vessels. Rotating themed exhibitions highlight the vast holdings. The one downside is that the museum entry fee is high, but worth paying, however the Nezu double dips by then charging a separate fee for its highlighted special exhibitions.
MoreReally nice and calm atmosphere, perminent galleries are beautiful and well explained in English. The birds and flowers seasonal gallery was truly beautiful. The gardens are a real wow machine. Don't muss this place.
MoreFirst of all the exhibits have always been an insight to Japanese aesthetics and culture. A don’t miss as an American that loves traveling in Japan. The design of the building is amazing with an excellent tradition from the streets of Tokyo to garden silence. Don’t miss the cafe in the garden. Photo tells all. If you are looking for a place to escape the frenzy of the urban chaos this is one of many great places.
MoreThe Nezu Museum is a great retreat when you need a short break from the bustle of Tokyo. The museum and the garden can be experienced in under 2 hours.
MoreThe museum itself is already an art piece..surrounded by bamboo and the exhibitions are merged with the nature...you are suggested to have a walk inside the building first because there are just a few exhibitions showcasing the old Japanese and chinese historical art piece..once u have finished it..please go outside to the garden..as there would be more art piece placing outdoors which you need to pay a lot of attention to find them one by one...the walk isn’t that difficult but it is great to be here at around Sep or Oct timeframe because it’s less hot...just be aware of the non photo area because they have the signs within the exhibition area ..
MoreDid not go in, but this museum looks first class, from the exhibition, facilities point of view. So convenient by metro, and with parking too. I’ll be back.
MoreBeautiful museum with Japanese and Chinese Art, it is not very big but the exhibition rooms are beautiful. There is also a big garden connected to the museum, which is very beautiful!
MoreGreat museum the entry cost 1000 yen for the museum and the garden both are so beautiful specially the garden is fabulous and need at least 2 to 3 hours to visit all of it
More8 minutes by foot from Omotesando Station on the Tokyo Metro Ginza Line, Chiyoda Line and Hanzomon Line. The museum was founded in 1941 to preserve and display Japanese and East Asian antique art from the collection of its founder, Nezu Kaichiro, a businessman whose career included being President of the Tobu Railway Co., Ltd. It reopened in October 2009, newly designed by Kengo Kuma. The expanse of this open, relaxing space is an enjoyable place to appreciate art. The lush 17,000 square meters of Japanese garden creates an oasis in the city, where visitors can take pleasure in the passage of the seasons.
MoreThis is a small, but quite interesting museum of art. They also have a really beautiful Japanese garden.
MoreOne of the best Japanese gardens especially in Fall, with a variety of maple trees and small ponds, including tea houses and all of this right in the middle of tokyo.
MoreVery nice museum & the building itself is worth the visit. You can’t take pictures inside exhibition rooms; english descriptions are not very detailed, so it may be worth it to use the audio guide. Allow at least 1.5-2 hours to visit the museum and 1 hour to walk around the gardens, which are impressive and highly recommended.
MoreNot too large, well thought displays, mature garden with many free-living birds, nice cafe on periphery of garden.
MoreAgree with all the other reviews about the gardens being the highlight of this museum. One thing to add: free insect repellant in large spray bottle provided at the upstairs entrance to the gardens at the back of the main building. I am a mosquito buffet, and the repellant worked well, keeping me from getting bitten.Quiet lockers and restrooms downstairs in the main building. Allow at least an hour to walk around outside. Many small, winding paths that look just like one another until you pass a small statue or a small house. The inside has only 2 small floors of exhibits In 6 galleries, and can be quickly walked through. No photos allowed inside, making a walk through even quicker. Adult admission ¥1200 and worth it for the garden.Did not try the tea house in another building out in the garden. Pretty crowded and not air conditioned. Pot of tea ¥750.
MoreBeautiful museum with an extensive gorgeous garden. The least Tokyo place in Tokyo.
MoreBeautiful building and gardens. A great escape from the great Tokyo berserk.
One of the best museums in Tokyo. This private museum have a small but incredible collections of painting and sculptures from 3rd century to 19th century. Being in different museums in Tokyo, highly recommend this museum with its gorgeous garden. Only downside is its lack of audio guide in English, only available in Japanese, however enough description is available at each piece that make up for it.
MoreTiny musuem. The external area is lovely. Keep in mind that the audio guides are only in Japanese so you have to get by with what is written by the pieces and a bit of guessing. The shop has very beautiful postcardsm
MoreBeautiful museum and a centre of piece, great place to relax for a change in busy Tokyo. Make sure you explore both the inside museum as well as the outside gardens. If you feel like it, you can experience a small tea ceremony and taste some local sweets.
MoreGallery’s were not vast but still wonderful. The garden was my favorite part.
Incredible museum, unlike many other art museums it doesn't overwhelm you with how big it is. Has around 5 exhibits which is perfect for going through at a leisurely pace for a couple of hours. From there I highly recommend eating at the cafe out back, which has a lovely view of the garden and then after eating take your time walking through the garden and appreciate where you are. Loved it
MoreBeautiful building, the type of fancy house you expect from a japanese architect
I would recommend this place to anyone. The garden was pretty and quiet. The art was beautiful. It was a well curated museum.
